What is Business VoIP?
VoIP put simply enables voice data traffic to be carried over the Internet using Internet Protocol (IP), hence the term Voice over IP.
The Progression of Business VoIP
The first widely used Voice over IP application appeared in the mid-1990s, with services that enabled Internet users to make free voice calls between specially equipped PCs, or between a regular phone and a specially equipped PC. Even though quality was often erratic, users found this early Voice over IP technology a great way to save toll charges on long-distance and international calls, however voice quality on managed IP networks can now match the standard public voice network.

Google gears up to provide small business VoIP solutions
Shortly after the recent acquisition of Gizmo5, rumours were rife that Google would be looking to plan a complete business VoIP calling package to push on from it's succesful web activated telephone calling services. This seems like a natural progression for Google and it appears that this may be the case over the coming year.
After a recent online post, Bradley Horowitz, Google’s vice president, said that Google Voice and cloud computing will be huge playsfor the search engine giant in 2010". Horowitz cxontinued saying "Google wants voice to be freed up from any silos" which seems to indicate that a move forward from the web based VoIP applications is becoming imminent.

Nortel Narrows Losses thanks to Business VoIP
Nortel managed has reduced its ongoing losses from $3.40 billion in Q3 2008 to just over $500 million in Q3 of 2009, however in the same breathe it has also reported that total revenue fell from $1.6 billion in Q3 2008 to close to $1.00 billion.
It was clear by looking at Nortel's latest earnings report that the business VoIP division, showed a significant improvement with it's Carrier VoIP and Applications Solutions (CVAS) seeing the revenues make the upward climb. Nortel stated within the release that "CVAS revenues in the third quarter of 2009 were $208 million, an increase of 14 percent compared with the year ago quarter due to contract deliveries and project completions in the third quarter of 2009,"
